Expansion of freshwater species list

  • Discovery of 2,296 new and unrecorded freshwater species
    - Full-scale promotion of research on unexplored taxonomic groups (since 2022)
  • Securing of 11,007 freshwater species and 458,000 specimens
  • Establishment of freshwater-specialized storage system
    - Introduction of digitizing studio and commencement of production of digital images of freshwater specimens (since 2021)

2023-2025

  • Discovery of 3,200 new and unrecorded freshwater species through expansion of research on unexplored taxonomic groups
    - Discovery of 50 species of unexplored taxonomic groups such as Platyhelminthes and Annelids
  • Securing of 13,000 freshwater species and 600,000 specimens
  • Expansion from preservation-centered storage operation to digital-based shared storage
    - Production of high-resolution digital images (over 1,000 cases per year), content production and sharing, and public disclosure

2026-2028

  • Discovery of 4,000 new and unrecorded freshwater species through expansion of research areas including rare taxonomic groups
    - Discovery of 100 species of unexplored taxonomic groups such as Porifera and Tardigrada
  • Securing of 15,000 freshwater species and 800,000 specimens
  • Standardized specimen storage and continuous management of information
    - Production of high-resolution digital images (over 2,000 cases per year), establishment of digital archive, and expanded public disclosure and utilization

Target Project 1. Expansion of Freshwater Species List

  • Expansion of the national species list through identification of freshwater species not yet revealed (discovery of new/unrecorded species)
  • Strengthening the function of the national key asset, i.e., the storage facility, through quantitative and qualitative expansion of biological specimens held
  • Establishment of digital images of stored biological specimens to enhance permanent preservation and utilization

Securing freshwater plants, animals, and microorganisms through surveys of freshwater rivers and unique habitats (caves, wetlands, brackish water, etc.)
